Managing Expectations

Managing Expectations

One of the most important things I learned during my practicum is that I am prone to wishful thinking and unrealistically expectations. My expectations of what can be done in an hour are unrealistic. My expectations of students’ capacity are often unrealistic. This is part of learning to be a teacher—having realistic expectations and creating manageable lesson plans.

During my practicum, I gave a lesson on Greta Thunberg, which was an introduction into Event Writing. I asked students to write an event story, starting out with a timeline, and then an outline. I thought the assignment would take a few classes, but students have needed five blocks to get to their first draft!

This has been annoying to say the least. And a good lesson in planning. I had no idea it would take this long. As my teacher mentor, Pat, has said a few times now—I need to create more manageable lesson plans.
